At the urging of a friend, I got back to work on these Transitioning videos as he is now jumping into the Adobe Premiere Pro application.

As I’ve noted in my blogs, for the Final Cut Pro editor migrating over to Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5, the transition really could not be much easier. I often refer to PPro as “Final Cut Pro 8″ because it feels like the natural progression from FCP 7.

But there are a few quirks within the application that will drive you absolutely bonkers. So before you pull your hair out and start swearing up a blue streak, here’s a few of the “gotchas” that got me and how to avoid them.

One great thing about Adobe is that they ARE listening to feedback. So if you would like to offer input as Adobe prepares CS6, be sure to go to the website listed at the end of the video.

I have always had an issue with premiere having to wait for premiere to conform the audio to 32 bit before you can do anything.. Not a problem in vegas or FinalCut. If you drop an hour long program into the timeline just to add more black to the heads and tails you have to wait quite awhile for premiere to conform the audio.. Any workarounds?

You know there was an Audio Mixer window in FCP7 with identical functionality - I'm not seeing how this is much more powerful.

Can you not add keyframes to clip level, so they travel with the clip when you move it?

The FCP Audio mixer does not have submixing capabilities nor did have the range of automation controls of the PPro mixer.

The FCP mixer was decent, but the PPro one is much better designed and has a lot more functionality. What I'm showing here is just one thing so FCP folks don't get burned by Track only based keyframes at the moment.

Look at Richard Harrington, Robbie Carmen and Jeff Greenburg's "An Editor's Guide to Adobe Premiere Pro" for a really good overview of all the features of the audio mixer.

And for the clip level keyframes, yes you absolutely can on a clip by clip basis. I was just showing what happens when you use the automation controls for now. This is something that will most likely change with CS6

Regarding the track patching and having to select both the source and record tracks you're cutting them to - Premiere operates just like Avid does. While it seems like an extra step, it can be very useful because you can activate the record side, deactivate the source side, and cut in filler while you're cutting in video and/or audio. If you need to insert a gap or blank space you can use whatever is loaded in your source monitor - just deselect the source side track, select the record side tracks and insert/overwrite.

If Premiere changes this track behaviour it would be a travesty, in my opinion. One of my biggest complaints about FCP was that it assumed what you wanted to do regarding track selection and required too much unclicking of autoselects or locking tracks to force it to do what I want.

Also, if you want to bring just Video in but your source has Video and Audio, just deselect the audio on the right panel in your sequence (record/canvas side). You don't have to deselect both source and record.

What Premiere needs to implement is autopatching. If my source is default patched to A1 and A2, when I deselect A1 on the record side and select A5 it should automatically patch A1 on the source side to A5. It needs to be a preference though - some people hate it. Avid does this brilliantly and it makes patching incredibly fast (this was the first feature request I sent Adobe, actually).

Great tip about setting your audio at the start of the project - that was driving me crazy the other day. Ended up taking audio to Soundtrack Pro to split my tracks.
