Makin' a Nebula by removing stars in Photoshop, then animating in After Effects

COW Blogs : Graham Quince's Blog : Makin' a Nebula by removing stars in Photoshop, then animating in After Effects
In this tutorial, the first of four of creating nebulas in Adobe After Effects, I start by getting an image of the Horsehead nebula from Nasa's image galleries. I run it through Photoshop to remove the stars and background, using the Select Color Range, spot removal and the background removal tool. Once cleaned, I drop it into After Effects and use CC Particle World to add dust, gases and 3D stars.

What a very strange post to make. You’re a cow leader, just like me. You may know this stuff but plenty of others do not.

If you watched the video you’d see that I remove the stars from the original NASA image, so that I can then fly a camera around the nebula creating a level of 3D-ness. The tutorial demonstrates several techniques: 2.D, layers, stacking CC Particle World, Photoshop’s Background removal tools amoung others.

If you don’t like something, don’t watch, but always try to be kind.

??...ok I'm sorry but why are you posting this. I'm glad you are proud of your work. It is a good feeling. But this stuff is very beginner-level... Here is a question. Why remove the stars from the background if you are only going to animate the stars in the foreground?

Here you'll find a bunch of tutorials for using After Effects (mainly). I have a YouTube channel, called ShiveringCactus (long story - not funny anymore) where I post the videos.
