NAB 2016: AJA, HDbaseT and IP video

COW Blogs : My Canadian Studio : NAB 2016: AJA, HDbaseT and IP video
We were at NAB 2016 and met with Bryce Button of AJA. We asked him to explain why AJA is betting on HDbaseT and IP video. In this short video he explains the difference between these 2 ways of transporting HD and 4K video.

This might get in you edit room sooner than you think.

this will all come down to money. Right now, HDbase-T is great for extenders, like the RovoCam, but it requires a box from AJA to convert the HDbase-T into HD-SDI, control and power, which costs $495 for each camera. Black magic showed HD to IP converters for $495 each, but they are all different standards, not HDbase-T. AJA showed the Kona IP, but no one discussed routing into these products. AJA showed an expensive third party company in a rack chassis (not an AJA brand) to convert HD video into IP for the Kona IP.

The AIMS alliance (which AJA belongs to) is working to come up with common standards. This will be wonderful, but in the mean time, it's all expensive and very new, and "we" will continue to use
AJA KUMO and Blackmagic Videohub routers, until all of this settles down.

Sooner than you think, does not mean 6 months from now, unfortunately.
