G-Tech 4TB G-DRIVE USB 3 Hard Drive

COW Blogs : RunRobot Blog : G-Tech 4TB G-DRIVE USB 3 Hard Drive

Hi,

I'm just wondering how suitable people find the G-Tech 4TB G-DRIVE USB 3 Hard Drive for using to access/store media on for editing purposes on either Avid and/or Premiere Pro CC? I usually need to access native files such as 1080p HD and on occasion 2k and 4K footage.

Thanks in advance.
David

I use exclusively USB3 - doesn't really matter the brand as long as you have 7200rpm or better. Any more than 3 tracks of simultaneous 1080 video, or any 2k or 4k and i pre-render the raw footage on the 1080 sequence so it plays smoother for the initial cut, though you really need a RAID and mega processor for that type of footage.

Hi Mike,

I find it slower to copy across files and like you said it handles 1080 footage fine but 2K begins to stutter and forget even trying to play back 4K! Why have GTech dropped the Firewire 800 connectors I wonder and may I ask if what you use/recommend for an external drive to store media files for using with NLE's such as Premiere and Avid?

I have a two year old Mac Pro with a 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon and 12 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC (ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB graphics card). Hopefully I get another year or so out of it! I use Avid and Premiere a lot with After Effects as well as other Adobe CC apps.

Thanks
David

Hi Mike,

I have a 2 year old Mac Pro using 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. I can't understand why GTech don't sell their drives with better cabling than USB's. May I ask if you could recommend better drives for external storage of media files to use with Premiere, Avid etc?

Thanks
David

Hi David,

I'm not sure if you've found a solution yet but we do have drives with Firewire connections including the G-RAID and G-Speed series.

4K over USB 3 could be dicey. 1080 should work fine. Once you get past 2 simultaneous streams of playback you can run into a bottleneck, though your processor is part of the equation.

Is this on a laptop or desktop machine?
