Ok, to start, I've been reading about Shane's exploits for a long time on lafcpug here and now on his blog and he's had some interesting rigs involving rubberbands (i seem to remember that was you in a g5 with a rubberbanded set of drives) and now his latest macbeast.
Well i've had my mac pro since about a month or so before the octos came out. And Since then I've added a HDD a few times, which started first as a place to put media, than it was a third drive to put music and project files on. then it was another drive which i raided with the other 500 inside to create a 1tb raid 0 setup. I repartitioned 1 drive to install leopard on 1 part and keep music and projects on another.
So at this point I'm up to 4 drives, and 1 optical drive and the stock 2 gigs of ram (i know...i know)
this is in response to shane ross, who if you don't know, is a leader for FCP users here and several other major websites. he posted in my previous blog
I agree that FCP can work very very well but let me ask you the following questions:
Do your computer run on more than a gig of ram, a lot of the ones I work on at the computer labs I work at do not which is a problem.
Are your computers built and run to just do that kind of work, or do you have people doing flash, photo editing, scanning, script writing, fcp editing, dvd creation, etc on them?
I also wrote this a bit bitter about a lot of my day so it's pretty negative. And i'd be lieing if i said I didn't love it many times. but there are so many odd quirks and things that it's just hard to deal with some times.
So I have set my sites on jobs when I graduate. It's pretty clear I'm not going to be inducted to the orphanage as their newest lead compositor straight out of college, not that it hurts to dream mind you, but it certainly hurts to expect such things. So I've been focusing on a much more realistic vacancy: Roto Artist.
Well now the blogs are becoming part of Creative COW!
As many of you have probably noticed changes have been happening all over as we upgrade our look and feel to become more universal throughout the site.
The Blogs have long been the red headed stepchild of Creative COW but no more! We are officially adopting them in and will begin to promote them more heavily throughout the site.
Ok, so I supose I should start one of these with an introduction to my self, and though I will be talking about me whenever i'm talking here and my experiences, we all had to start some where, and the start is where we are at. So lets begin shall we?
First off, if you have issues with bad grammar and possibly bad spelling, than I recommend you leave asap, as I am good at neither.
Secondly, I want to thank you for reading the following, and any subsequent entries. If it wasn't for the COW, and the readers at the COW, I wouldn't be the person I am now. So thanks! Ok lets begin shall we?
It is a well known fact that falling in love is bad for your knees! But after a fall you also need to go searching for stones. Since I am too bruised (pronounced as broke) to buy such stones, I decided to make one myself and as usual Cinema4D is my knight in shining armour. So folks, here it is:
Happily, my better half loved it, even though she can't wear it! Thanks Cinema4D for making up for all those missed anniversaries and birthdays! Hopefully when I get time during the weekend I will post some workflow checkshots. Have a great weekend!
This is my first Blog ever! And creative cow rocks. Many thanks to creativecow and the great team behind it. After effects and Cinema 4D - I have learnt from the many podcasts, posts and tutorials on this site. So, I start with a recent model that I did.
I guess its better late than never to start a blog. I hope to use this platform to share my work and tricks that I have learnt over the last few years, All thanks to creativecow!
I am sure, 2008 is going to be a rocking year and we will have a great time - so this watch!
In business you're all about your name. Keep a good name and business flows to your door. Get a bad name and you're looking for a new career. Get a really REALLY good name and from my own personal experience, some people will try and use your name for their own gain.
Now if you're reading this blog, then you're already aware of the Creative COW forums and the really REALLY good thing we have going here. During a recent thread in the Apple Color forum, a user pointed out that a production facility in Los Angeles changed their name to Blue Cow Creative.
So for the first time in a long time, I find myself completely at a loss. I've lost my voice. Gone. I woke up yesterday and couldn't speak - at all. The doctor tells me it will be at least until Saturday before I can talk again.
It's frustrating because I can't create podcasts. Obviously I can't record them, but I also read out loud as I write them, to make sure they sound right. So much of what I do is wrapped up in speech.
Not that it's even close to the same thing, but my father is going through something similar. He had a stroke a few weeks ago, and is no re-learning to talk. He's lost the connection between many of his mental images and the words associated with them - He can't access a lot of his vocabulary just yet.
OK, I found it. Yup, I found Lindeboom Beer in Amsterdam. I asked for it at nearly every restaurant I went to and no one had it. Heineken could be found EVERYWHERE. And one of my new favorites, BAVARIA, was in a few places, but Lindeboom beer was a rarity.
Was this due to the fact that it is a really good and rare beer? Maybe. I am not a beer connesieur, but when I DID find it, and buy one...it was pretty good!
Where did I find it? At a bar just a couple blocks from the Red Light District...and within sight of Central Station and the main street that leads to DAM Square. They had all sorts of signs indicating that they did, in fact, serve Lindeboom beer.
Hi everyone - I've been pretty silent for the last few months because I've been hard at work on a new Creative Cow Master Series DVD - "Internet Killed the Video Star: A guide to Creating Video for the Web." The 4.5 hour DVD will be available very shortly. Feel free to spread the word.
The latest iteration of the Creative COW website is well under way and I have to say that it's the first time in many years that I have logged into the COW and haven't hated the way it looks. I always meant to come back to it and get it done but couldn't find the time. So, last April, I gave it a minor overhaul but that was just a band-aid on a car wreck victim.
This is an edit of my post yesterday, noting the newest new interface. We think we're getting warmer. As The Cow's major redesign continues, there will be another tweak or two along the way.
One more update: following your requests, we're definitely working on adding support for YouTube, SWF, and more.
Note for you text entry folks: that box very slightly overlaps with the right nav, but you'll see that it doesn't get in the way of actually entering the text.
Hello! First and Foremost my name is NOT Martin McTiller, but Martin Tiller. Something got written down wrong in the sign up phase. Although admittedly there is some Scottish/Irish from my mother's side. Tiller is Welsh, Ibelieve.
This is part one of a probable three part post. It's mainly a rant on hardware issues I've had the last couple of months.
The Lappy:
I won't mention the manufacturer other than to say it's not a Dell or an Apple laptop. From what I've read on forums and review sites, this laptop is overall in the 85-90 out of 100 group for cost/performance, yadda yadda.
Before I begin my foray into the world of blogging I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to Ron & Tim for their efforts in getting me situated with the Cow. I look forward to the many blogs ahead and hope that some of you may find the information at least useful, and at best challenging.
I have toyed with the notion of having a blog for a while now, but only yesterday did i actually find something worth discussing online...namely Artbollocks, and how it pertains to the video industry.
If its a term you are not famiiar with let me explain....It refers to the way "artists" justify what they do by means of pretentious, overly complex and fanciful descriptions validating whatever creative decision they have finally chosen to take.
I might have bought Logic for no reason (thank god I make music too), But i was relieved to see that they finally got the OMF imtegrated in this version of soundtrack. How many times have I wanted to export an OMF from my FCP timeline into another app (other than Protools) on my mac to do the final mix on some of my projects.
Well, at long last, the COW has a new interface. It's been a long time coming and it's way overdue. I had gotten to where I just couldn't bear to look at the site anymore. The new look is far more balanced and in keeping with the whole idea and spirit of the COW. I am happier than you can imagine to see it as it had worn on my nerves for quite a long time but we were just too busy to deal with it. It finally just got to the point where I told Tim that I was going to just have to do it because it was more than I could bear anymore. When we designed the original COW, Eric, Kathlyn and I did it all -- aesthetics and mechanics -- in under two weeks, total.
We've arrived in Sunny Las Vegas! Checked in to the fabulous Flamingo hotel which we really used to enjoy for the penquins in the outdoor habitat, but they checked out last year so it's not quite the same. Still gotta love staying in the "original" strip hotel that started it all.
The 150 or so of you I've added in the past couple of days may have noticed that the comments weren't working right for you. They're working for everyone now.
I got this lovely letter from Dave Gorrie about an article in the current issue of The Creative COW magazine by John Woody, about the cutting-edge lab at James Madison University. Dave graduated in 2000 and clearly did his homework! He cut over 1500 promos at The Discovery Channel, and has since started his own production business...
I'm thrilled by how many of you want to join 'ol Bessie at The COWBlogs. The initial stampede came faster than my hooves could send the approvals, but by now, everybody should be all set. New accounts should also be getting approved much more quickly now.
If yours hasn't been approved yet, it's probably because you didn't use your real name when creating your account. I've tried to notify everyone in that situation, and will be activating those accounts as soon as you reply.
We all know how techno-centric our industry is. And how quickly that technology changes. Simply keeping up with all the new capabilities, gear, workflows, software, platforms, etc. can be a full-time job. And gear is critical. We can't do our jobs without it, and we can't do our jobs *well* if we don't know how to best *use* that gear.
