at&t: Faster iPhone in 2008

Well of course Apple would never say anything in advance, but thanks to the CEO of at&t, we know for certain an iPhone that can run on the 3G high speed internet networks will be out in 2008. No word on the exact date of availability or the cost, but at least it's something. This is what I've been waiting for personally, although I hope the new phone will also have at least 16GB of storage as well.

Ha!

That's interesting....  I did not realize that the iPhone couldn't run on the 3G network.  Isn't that kinda like offering a Mac Pro fully decked out and then putting in a 10 mbit network card for network access.

Battery life, phone size, & data speed -- pick two

"Isn't that kinda like offering a Mac Pro fully decked out and then putting in a 10 mbit network card for network access."

Not at all. Actually, it's a design trade-off. Existing 3G chips used lots of power, and Apple had to choose between battery life, phone size, and data speed (pick two).

Personally, I wouldn't trade 3G for carrying around a Treo-size brick. You can't use the slower 2.5G network for everything, but I've found it extremely useful, and the iPhone's ongoing success has vindicated Apple's choice overall.

Seriously?  that's been one of the big complaints about the phone since it came out.  One of the big reasons why I didn't switch originally, plus I didn't think it was enough memory to be used as an iPod.

Apple is already on record about 3G on the iPhone

"Well of course Apple would never say anything in advance..."

Umm, actually they already did. In September Steve Jobs went on record about 3G coming to the iPhone in 2008. See this in the New York Times.

Don't underestimate the net capabilities of the current iPhone, either. It's fine for many applications, and has been incredibly useful to me. I saved lots of time last weekend routing around Thanksgiving traffic with its online map. Works great. I use Google Reader for RSS, too, which pares down web content and also works great on the iPhone's cell network. To say nothing of WiFi, which is 10x faster than 3G, and available most of the places I really spend my time.

BTW, Walter, I want to belatedly thank you for your responses about your Color workflow. I was out of town & got swamped on email. Great stuff.

my pleasure

My pleasure.  I'm getting a lot of great response from the DVD as well so it's good to know it's helping folks.
