Ideas for old LaCie Drives?

I just had yet another LaCie drive die on me this week.  That makes four this year.  All of the drives were at least 2 years old with the oldest being 4 years old.  Ok.... the four year old drive I can understand.  It was used pretty heavily.  The others... used on occasions.

Each of the drives were the d2 models.  Two of them were the dual interface (USB and firewire 400) and the other two were Triple interface (USB, firewire 400 and 800).  All of the drives have a one year warranty.  Kinda silly since the physical drives inside have a three year warranty but LaCie does have that option to exercise.

Anybody have any ideas on what to do with my new door stops?

Any ideas of what kind of drives to use now?  LaCie seems to have lost their quality standards.

I haven't used a Canon
by Wayne Carey on Aug 10, 2007

I haven't used a Canon camera in years now... not since the XL1S.  This last drive was never hooked up to a Mac.  It was used on a PC for DVD Duplication.  Since this, I have replaced them with Western Digital MyBook drives.

And by the way... it was the drives themselves that corrupted and failed, not the box itself.

Hi Wayne, I just stopped

Hi Wayne,

I just stopped buying LaCie, don't know anyone who hasn't fried at least two.

Anyway; you wouldn't happen to have a Canon dv camera ?

Apparantly having a LaCie on the Firewire 800 bus, and a Canon dv cam on a 400 on a Mac fries the Raid controller-chips in the lacie. Learned that the hard way.
I've switched to ioMega.
Anyway, since nowadays most drives are closet RAIDs, opening up the drive might yield 'inexpensive disks' that can be used on their own.
