Hello World!

I finally decided to take a stab at this blogging thing. I've picked up a lot of good info reading other people's blogs and I'd like to be a contributor of knowledge as well as a receiver.

Last night I attended the October meeting of the Los Angeles Post Production Group (LAPPG) and even though I didn't win anything in the raffle I did manage to mingle and learn a few things from the presenters that evening. First up was Jeffrey Way from AJA Video Systems talking about the Ki Pro. For those that don't know the Ki Pro is basically a tapeless VTR that records Apple ProRes (regular and HQ with Proxy and LT support coming later... not sure about 4444) onto a HDD (optional SSD drive) and ExpressCards34 memory cards. The Ki Pro is a bit smaller than I thought it would be and doesn't look like it would be cumbersome sandwiched between the camera and tripod. The company I work for does a lot of event coverage and we'd like to get away from shooting HDV, but the record time to solid state cards isn't quite there yet to cover long presentations and we'd also like a higher quality format so the Ki Pro looks like it could be a winner for us. Jeffrey also said that the Ki Pro is just the first in a family of products so I'm looking forward to seeing what else AJA has up their sleeve.

Philip Hodgetts capped off the night w/a 45min Cliff's Notes version of a 3.5hr presentation on the changing nature of business and post production. I've seen Philip present a few times before and I've always come away feeling like I've learned something valuable... and that Philip has probably forgotten more about post than I'll ever know. While a presentation on business normally wouldn't seem that awesome, I kept keen focus during this one because post is my business and I want to know all that I can about remaining relevant. Before I left I made sure to grab a discounted copy of his book The New Now. Yes, you can buy a cheaper PDF download but I'm still not big on reading books on my computer monitor. The paperback also gives me a chance to, gasp, get away from my computer once in a while.

Well, that's it for blog post #1. Hopefully it wasn't too painful a read and you'll come back for #2.
