What we need to remember is that at the end of the day what we do as editors is tell stories. It is our responsibility to connect the client and the target viewer with a clear and focused message, because every story has the power to bring about change. Change to the audience and the world around us. We need to make sure that our clients message is understood, and that the viewer is moved to action.

Thanks for taking the time to read my blog, I take it you are referring to print editors in your comment. I am a video editor and as such work directly with a client forging their message.
Being an editor is largely an "honorary" job. You must ensure the quality of published material, through peer-review, own comments, and editing. You are responsible not just to your client but to the wide audience around you.
