Telestream Episode Pro Installed Today. Why did I wait?

Well I finally gave up on Apple's Compressor as it has just gotten flakier and flakier as time goes on. Not sure what Apple did to the software but even after a clean install, the thing went south in two weeks on a brand new, fully updated Octo Core.

I've been looking at Telestream's Episode for a while as some other shops I work with use it and love it. Well after one more aggravating failure from Compressor, I pulled the trigger today and added Episode Pro. Geez, what in the heck was I waiting for?! This thing is simple and has more options than Compressor ever did. AND I don't have to set up that stupid "Q Master" virtual cluster deal that never seems to work correctly. Episode just automatically works off all cores on the Mac Pros.

The biggest thing I now have is Flash encoding right in the same application so I don't necessarily have to use Adobe's Media Encoder (and it's flaky behavior). So now in one batch I can pretty much compress my original Quicktimes to whatever the heck the client wants.

The big difference between Episode and Episode Pro are the ability to batch more than 25 items at a time (Pro) and some additional higher end codecs (Pro). If you don't need those extra features, just go with Episode. I gotta say, I'm done with Compressor after just one day using Episode.

Run, don't walk, to Telestream's site and download the trial version now to see for yourself.

Episode Pro - Issues were User Error
by walter biscardi on Jan 30, 2009
So it turns out that Episode Pro has so many settings in it, both of my issues were caused by User Error. I guess I'm not used to having a compression tool that is as Pro as the name implies.

There was a simple Timeode switch I missed for the embedded TC and the quality issue was another setting somewhere else. So we're rocking and rolling now. More soon.
Episode Pro - mostly good, some bad
by walter biscardi on Jan 28, 2009
Some good, some bad.

So Episode just works consistently. It has tremendous user controls. That's the REALLY good thing.

Now so far the bad are two bothersome issues.

Image quality is not consistently as good as Apple's Compressor. During normal playback it all looks hunky dory, but when you stop playback, step through frames, or shuttle, there is a lot of blockiness that I've never seen in H.264 files before.

Timecode has been stripped off every single H.264 file I've created so far. This is a huge issue for us because our transcriptionist uses software that reads this TC automatically. Also, when we do many of our cuts, we don't bother putting TC window on the screen because our clients can read the TC right in Quicktime Player.

One minor thing is the TC window that is generated must include a header and the black backdrop around it. In Compressor you can do just the numbers and you can remove the black backdrop which creates a much less distracting TC window.

Can't complain about the consistency of the performance or the amount of options, including Flash, that are included with Episode. I DON'T miss hitting "Submit" in Compressor and then just watching the Batch Monitor sit on "Processing" with nothing happening for hours. Just a few things need addressing.
