WHY THE WRITERS ARE STRIKING

I case you didn't know, the Hollywood writers are on strike. For those of you who are unclear exactly why (like me)

lays out very clearly why.

How the music industry ruined it for everyone except the man...
by Aharon Rabinowitz on Nov 28, 2007

Remember a couple of years ago when the music industry got all up in arms about downloading music illegally? They argued on the moral high-ground that A) you were breaking the law and B) even if you were trying to “stick it to the man,” it was the artists, the creative people behind the content, that were the real ones getting hurt.

Stricter more enforceable laws went into place that protected the artists from criminals like you and me. And little kids were arrested for fighting the establishment - AKA downloading music - and the people rejoiced. Well some of them anyway – mostly those in the music industry.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I can tell you that the issue brought up during that time made me re-consider downloading media illegally. Uh… Not that I ever did. I’m just speaking hypothetically of course.

Right or wrong, these laws have helped make the distribution of music and video content over the internet profitable to their respective industries, and the business of video and audio for the web have flourished because of that.

Today, as someone who creates video content for the web, it’s nice to think that there are laws to protect the creative people that breathe life into the content we enjoy everyday.

Unfortunately, the recent writers strike has brought to light that it’s not necessarily the creative people being protected. It turns out that for video content over the web, the writers, depending on the venue, get either nothing or a fraction of what they should be paid. I guess the “creatives” never expected to be snookered by the people they were working for.

The irony of it all is that while we as consumers are now doing the right thing by paying money for content distributed over the web, the creative people are still being given the short end of the stick – and of course the corporations that market their stuff walk away with the bulk of the profits.

I’m not saying we should revert to “sticking it to the man,” I’m just saying that it’s something to think about the next time you’re ready to spend money so that you can legally download your favorite TV show from iTunes. Maybe consider putting that credit card away for a few weeks until this is resolved?

that has not been explained elsewhere

Whenever a strike is talked about in the "media" the details in this video are glossed over. Seems like a reasonable expectation to get royalties on internet video distribution.

Sure people say writers should be happy with what they get, but because there has been a precedent for writers getting residuals, it stands to reason those residuals will keep up with the times.

That being said, there are many financial and other arrangements which have conveniently not kept up with the times. For example the CAFE standards have been increased very slowly. Also, the minimum household income to qualify for certain federal student loans has not been increased with inflation, so if household income of $25,000 a year bought a college education in 1965 the government thinks it should be the case today. Very convenient indeed!

The comedian in me says "maybe the writers' strike will put to bed such poorly written shows as Bionic Woman" but the future writer in me says "4 cents? You're kidding right? What's the big deal?"

I suspect the big deal is that due to the worldwide reach of the Internet, there may in fact be more viewers online than there are on broadcast tv. A show such as Bionic Woman, which gets poor ratings in America due to its poor plots and all dialogue spoken by Miguel Ferrer, may in fact be extremely popular with internet viewers in France. Let's face it, there are only so many David Hasselhoff re-runs to keep our French comrades happy. Or is that Germany who loves the Hoff?

Anyway, I say to the Hollywood bean coutners, Either give the writers their extra 4 cents, or make the Running Man into a 7 night a week series. Aside from reincarnating Richard Dawson and giving Jesse Ventura another shot at stardom, people killing each other for money on tv is possibly the only alternative to paying writers to create compelling entertainment.

Ah.....!

Great video!  Explains everything I needed to know about the strike and why it is happening.

Don't you just love the greedy corporate America that wants more and more...
