FCPX and Sparse Disk Images..

COW Blogs : Steve Modica's Blog : FCPX and Sparse Disk Images..
I had a great customer call today!
The customer was using sparse disk images (created via disk utility) to encapsulate projects and events folders into one "thing" they could easily move around. All of these disk images were kept on their Small Tree ST-RAID and then mounted via a double click onto their desktop.

With this scenario, they could have many projects open and they could share them easily with other users (they could even send them to remote editors).

There was one bug... If they mounted more than one disk image, and those images were "large", one of them would disappear. We went through several permutations of this.

Here's the answer: DO NOT copy disk image projects (or even project directories) with the Finder! If you do, you will have duplicate Project IDs and FCPX will get confused and drop one of them. Always copy projects from within FCPX using "Duplicate". With that change, things should work a lot better.

Steve Martin has a great piece on Ken Stone's site:

There are a number of places online where people are discussing this. I have not put together a step by step yet. I'm working on it.
The executive summary:
1. Create disk image with disktutil (make it as large as necessary)
2. Put disk image up on shared storage
3. Double click disk image to "mount" it locally
4. Import stuff and create projects on that new disk image
5. Close FCPX and umount when done. Others can use the image as well.

DO NOT: have two people mount at once
DO NOT: copy them with finder. Create a new disk image and "duplicate" the project from within FCPX

You can "reduce" them after a lot of use using this command:

hdiutil compact MyFile.sparseimage

They tend to grow over time.

Know of anyplace someone has posted a step by step how-to of what you are describing?
If this really works, it would be great to share in detail. Thanks.

Steve Modica's place to pontificate.
